Talk about an island of endless opportunities for fun. St.Marteen is the place. I've visited most of the Caribbean, and this has been one of my favorite islands. For my 30th birthday, I wanted to keep things light, knowing that I would be on Holiday a month later. So I decided to do a 3-day getaway to St.Marteen with one of my friends. While I love solo traveling, I always say there's nothing like having a friend you can travel with and still come home friends. We had a blast exploring the islands and meeting so many lovely people. When they say that it is a friendly island, it really is.
Traveling To St.Marteen
The best thing about living in Atlanta is that it is the hub for Delta, with direct flights worldwide. I recommend flying Delta as limited flights go to St.Marteen. We had a direct flight 4 hours from Atlanta to St.Marteen. Be prepared that the airport is tiny, and once you arrive there, you will be transported by bus directly from the plane. You will line up in a line outside, so be prepared for the heat. Once inside, you will quickly go through customs and grab your bags before heading outside for transportation or a cab. There is only one baggage carousel yes I said one lol!!
Accommodations
The Morgan Resort
After several reviews, I decided to stay at the Morgan Resort. The hotel was great, and I give it 8/10. The hotel offers a free shuttle from the airport. The airport is located on the Maho Beach side of the island and about 5 minutes from the airport. The resort features 3 restaurants, a spa, and a stellar pool area. The room was nice, including a balcony, and of course, my favorite thing was my Chromecast to watch TV. We enjoyed cocktails on the poolside. The wait staff was terrific. This is not an all-inclusive, but the prices were pretty reasonable.
Places to Eat & Visit
Skip Jacks
One of St. Marttens' most popular restaurants, this spot is incredible. They're known for their lobster. This place lets you choose your own lobster and hold it while it is still alive. It sounds scary, but as a non-adventurous person, I enjoyed it. The lobsters are large enough to split. My friend and I decided to get ours cooked Cajun style, and it was full of flavor and amazing. The drinks were definitely strong; you won't need many.
Salt
Located in the Morgan Resort, this is a great place to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner if you are staying at the hotel. They offer a full menu of good American and Island eats. You can also order the whole menu pull side.
We Lounge
A popular nightlife spot, We Lounge offers food, drinks, and shisha. On the weekend, most tourists and locals hang out here. Located in Maho village, it is a short distance from the Morgan Resort. It is a rooftop that offers indoor and outdoor seating. A live DJ spins all of the hip-hop and Afrobeats hits until early morning.
Amore Lounge
If you're looking for a place with a chill vibe, this is the spot. Located on the opposite of the island, it features a full restaurant with great dishes, drinks, and shisha. This is a great place to go if you're not a big club person. You will be singing and rapping along to all the songs, enjoying the vibes. They stay open late, so if you head to a club on the island looking for something more chill, this is the spot.
St Barth
I've wanted to visit St.Barths forever, and there was no way that I would miss out on it. First things first, ensure that you plan your trip ahead. Most people decide to visit once they get to St.Marteen, which during the busy months may not be the best idea based on its popularity.
Transportation
We booked a Ferry ride with Great Bay Ferry. I booked about 3 and 1/2 weeks in advance. It's highly suggested that you book in advance as these rides sell out fast. The ferry ride is about 45 minutes. You have the option to sit inside or out. If it's a nice day outside, sit on the top deck and enjoy the views. Once you arrive in St.Barths, you will go through customs. Please make sure that you bring your passport.
Getting around the island can be tricky, as Uber is not offered, and Taxis are limited. I decided to rent a Mophie. It's a cute little car you've probably seen people in, similar to a slingshot. I rented from a company called Cool Rental. They deliver it to you directly at the port, and you return it there.
Things To Do
Beach Clubs
If you're looking to have a day trip like us, you will want to visit a beach club. The most popular spot is Nikki Beach. I highly recommend you email and make a reservation in advance. I've been to Nikki Beach before and planned to visit here. Unfortunately, we were told to call the day of and make a reservation for a day bed. I called several times, and when I did reach someone, they said they were sold out.
It was my birthday, and I refused to let this ruin the time. I found another popular spot Gypsy Beach. They are located next door to Nikki Beach and are super amazing. We had a slight issue with the staff on arrival. Still, everyone was friendly and accommodating. After getting our day bed set up, we had a great time.
Shopping
Unlike other European countries, St. Barth does not have VAT. However, if you have your passport, no taxes are included in your purchase. Before our ferry arrived, we visited a few stores: Louis Vuitton, Hermes, and Chrome Heart. Of course, since it was my birthday, I treated myself to a couple of items. Things were priced similarly to the US, but it made a big difference without tax.
This trip was amazing. It was relaxing and vibey at the same time. I would highly recommend visiting St.Marteen. I would definitely visit again and include Anguilla as a day trip next time. St.Barths has so much to offer. I would love to visit again and spend the night on the island to get a taste of the nightlife.
